The art of procurement: from raw machine to valuable asset

Behind every used machine that finds a new lease on life at Lekkerkerker Dairy & Food Equipment lies a sharp eye, perfect timing and a strong network. That is exactly what drives Sebastiaan de Winter, Procurement Manager. “I can often sense at a glance whether there is potential. Then the real work starts: negotiating, coordinating and ensuring everything arrives at the right place at the right time.”

From the pitch to the dairy plant

Sebastiaan began his career in sports, but ultimately found his place in the world of trade and engineering. “Negotiation and strategic sourcing energise me. I have known Niels Lekkerkerker for twenty years, and when he pointed me toward this role, I was immediately enthusiastic. Here, commerce, technology and sustainability come together.”

That blend makes his work surprisingly varied. “One day I am acquiring a single packaging machine, the next it is a complete factory. It is fast-paced. You have to switch gears quickly and sense what is happening behind the scenes. That is what makes it really rewarding.”

Straightforward communication builds lasting partnerships

Sebastiaan’s approach is pragmatic, direct and focused on the long term. “I believe in transparent communication. People know where they stand with me. That builds trust, and in the end that is what matters. Many suppliers return because they know: Lekkerkerker takes care of things properly.”

Trust shows up in special projects, like the recent purchase of an entire factory in Austria. “They needed to clear the site quickly. We managed everything, from dismantling to transport. And within no time the best machines were resold to clients looking for exactly that setup. That kind of win-win makes me proud.”

From machine to perfect match

Buying used dairy machinery is a craft on its own. Every day, Sebastiaan reviews dozens of offers and leads. “I look at technical condition, age, brand and how complete it is. But above all, is there demand? You can buy an excellent machine, but if nobody wants it, it is useless.”

When it comes to entire factories, there is much more at stake. “Then logistics and planning need organising too, risks assessed and internal coordination is essential. It is a different game, but a very rewarding one.”

Global network, Dutch approach

The market for used machines is full of motion. “Dairy plants around the world are expanding, relocating or upgrading. That creates opportunities. Thanks to our network, we are often among the first to hear about them. And when that happens, we must be ready to act.”

A growing trend is that major brands repurchase their own equipment to prevent resale. “That makes sourcing more complicated. There is immense demand for quality used equipment.”

What makes Lekkerkerker unique

“Speed and flexibility. We use our own people, so we can act quickly, from inspection to transport. And there is the family atmosphere. We are professional and personal, and people sense that.”

Anyone selling, from a single machine to a complete line, can expect honesty and transparency. “We offer realistic valuations, guide you through the process end to end and communicate openly and quickly. That is not only efficient but also a pleasure to work with.”

What starts with a keen eye and a single tip often becomes a long-term partnership. Because in the end, it is not about buying machines. It is about building trust. “And that starts with listening well and delivering on your promises.”
